Guitar Player Jimi Hendrix

Guitar Player Jimi Hendrix

Painting by Clifton Smith.

Yup, tomorrow will be 67 years since Jimi Hendrix came to us from a planet called Venus. You didn’t think I forgot did you? I don’t have a lot of time this morning since it’s Thanksgiving today. I got a turkey to get cooking soon. There is still a lot I have not said about the greatest guitar player ever, and the person who changed the course of music and my life.

Yesterday I was listening to some old bootleg Jimi Hendrix on my Macbook and falling under his spell until my wife told me that there is actually other music to listen too and some one in the room wanted to hear something different. I’m thinking what other music is that?

Sometimes it concerns me that I’m so easily put under Jimi’s Spell when I hear his music. I forget how deeply Led Zepplin penetrated my soul in the ’70′s and the way Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, and other blues artists I did not even know of captured my attention. It became an obsession to come home from school and go into trance for an hour or so while I zoned to a 33 rpm record. Needless to say, I was out of there after that, riding around town listening to Hendrix and Zep in my Mustang. I have to admit most nights I made a stop at home for dinner, my mom is the best cook in the world.

BTW: Stevie Ray is on the blue station now, I’m distracted.

Jimi simply puts me into a trance and I fall under his spell. I think I’m a Voodoochild most of the time. I relate to his words as much as I love his music. He was ahead of his time for sure. Ever listen to “Belly Button Window”, written by Jimi Hendrix? Well I think if you do you will understand that Jimi had some relevant thoughts on his mind at that time in his life. A controversial subject to say the least. But I agree with every word in the song. Listen to it closely.

WELL I’M UP HERE IN THIS WOMB
I’M LOOKIN’ ALL AROUND
HMM MM MM
WELL I’M LOOKIN’ OUT MY BELLY BUTTON WINDOW
AND I SEE A WHOLE LOT OF FROWNS
AND I’M WONDERIN’ IF THEY DON’T WANT ME, AROUND

WHAT SEEMS TO BE THE FUSS OUT THERE
JUST WHAT SEEMS TO BE THE HANG
CAUSE YOU KNOW IF YOU DON’T WANT ME THIS TIME AROUND
YEAH, I’LL BE GLAD TO GO BACK TO SPIRIT LAND
AND EVEN TAKE A LONGER REST
BEFORE A COMIN’ DOWN THE SHOOT AGAIN
MAN I SURE REMEMBER THE LAST TIME, BABY
THEY WERE STILL TALKIN’ ABOUT ME THEN
SO IF YOU DON’T WANT ME NOW
MAKE UP YOUR MIND
WHERE OR WHEN
MAKE UP YOUR MIND
IF YOU DON’T WANT ME NOW
GIVE OR TAKE
YOU ONLY GOT TWO-HUNDRED DAYS
CAUSE I AIN’T COMIN’ DOWN THIS WAY TOO MUCH MORE, AGAIN

YOU KNOW THEY GOT PILLS FOR ILLS, AND THRILLS, AND EVEN SPILLS
BUT I THINK YOUR JUST A LITTLE TOO LATE
SO I’M COMIN’ DOWN INTO THIS WORLD DADDY
REGARDLESS OF LOVE AND HATE
I’M GONNA SIT UP IN YOUR BED MAMMA
AND JUST A GRIN RIGHT IN YOUR FACE
AND THEN I’M GONNA EAT UP ALL YOUR CHOCOLATES
HA, AND SAY I HOPE I’M NOT TOO LATE

IF THERE’S ANY QUESTIONS MAKE UP YOUR MIND
GIVE OR TAKE
IF THERE’S ANY QUESTIONS MAKE UP YOUR MIND
GIVE OR TAKE
YOU GOT ONLY TWO-HUNDRED DAYS

AND I’M LOOKIN’ OUT MY BELLY BUTTON WINDOW
AND I SWARE I SEE NOTHING BUT A LOT OF FROWNS
AND I WON’T LIVE IF THEY DON’T WANT ME, AROUND

Coinciding with Thanksgiving gives me an opportunity to give some thanks. I want to thank my old lady of 28 years for putting up with me. I want to thank my parents for combining the right ingredients, letting me view out of in my own Belly Button Window so I could have the opportunity at 14 years old to listen to Jimi Hendrix. And I want to thank James Marshall Hendrix aka Jimi Hendrix for giving me what he had until he left us for the next world. GuitarPlayersCenter.com

PS; Thanks to my Sisters and Brother in laws and Sister in laws for being who they are, and giving my wife and myself the greatest nieces and nephews in the world. You know I’m unbiased too.!!

  1. Happy Birthday, Jimi!!!!!

  2. falling under his spell… this is what a true guitar great does. There has to be one out there surfacing soon, that 20 year rule is coming into play pretty soon! Jimi/Stevie… I’ll use Jim Morrision for the spell part, hypnotic… you want to hear more, you get lost in the music!

I was listening to a live Doors concert over the weekend..from Philly – and it just makes you want to close your eyes and live in that moment. Jimi and Stevie did that with their guitar’s.. it was a bond they had with music, that created the spell
